So What's A Charamusca?

The decision to spend an extended period of time in the country of my birth was mostly on a whim. I missed my family, friends and let me be real all the amazing food of Central Americas smallest country: El Salvador. So I bought my ticket and informed my parents I was taking a semester off from school. After the initial "What are you doing with your life?" comment they felt they needed to throw in there, they understood why I wanted to be here. It's a land that always calls back to you, no matter how long you've been away. In my case 2 years... In 2009 my two best friends and I (two of the coolest, chillest gringas ever) booked tickets to San Salvador, El Salvador and hilarity ensued. We met up with my family and I think they would agree we had a blast all summer. Well I'm here on my own this time and although I miss a lot of the things we take for granted (drinkable tap water) I am really happy to be here.
"So, what exactly is a charamusca you might ask?" and let me tell you, It's something I eat every day because you can get them in about a billion flavors. Charamuscas are little bags of deliciousness (don't make the joke) but really all you do is make a overly sweetened version of a natural fruit drink, pour it into a small bag, freeze and Voila! you've got a charamusca. now you can happily suck out all that sweetness from a hole in the corner! Fun times. Really its like a paleta (popsicle, for those not familiar with Spanish) but in a handy little bag. And you might think these aren't that impressive and to Salvadoreans they really aren't since they get to feast on them all the time. But to me they're amazing for two reasons: 1. You can get them made from fruits you're never going to have anywhere else and 2. Because they only cost 10 American cents! How cool is that!?
There are a ton of places you can get them, all you have to do is know a local who knows who makes the best ones in your street. Head over there, step over the kids playing with the hose (hope they don't decide to make you a target [although with the heat it's probably a welcomed thing])talk to the mom, hand her a $1 bill and walk away with 10 charamuscas that you will definitely eat throughout the day.
These simple things you can do everyday are one of the reasons I love this country. I hope you can join me here were I'll be posting everything I can. You can learn about my country and maybe decide to make it down here sometime. I promise you wont regret it!
P.S. If there's anything in particular you would like to know ask away I'll do my best to answer your questions.
